Role Summary

The Consumer Protection Division is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with consumer protection legislation. The Division assesses potential breaches of consumer protection law, conducts compliance inspections and undertakes investigations into alleged breaches of consumer protection law by traders.

The role holder will be required to contribute to the success of the Consumer Protection Division, which operates in a fast moving and high task volume environment. Given the diversity of consumer protection issues, the role holder will be expected to be a quick learner, flexible in their work approach and results focussed.

The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for supporting the Consumer Protection Manager in the administration of the compliance inspection activity and enforcement of consumer protection legislation. They will also support the overall work of the Unit on an ongoing basis, as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist manager in the planning and implementation of inspection activity undertaken by the Division. This will involve the scheduling of inspections and co-ordination of the inspection teams.

  • Participate in on-site inspections, as required.

  • Co-ordinate the activities of the inspection teams following completion of inspections. This will include managing the administration of enforcement actions taken in relation to breaches of consumer protection legislation identified during inspections.

  • Plan, design and co-ordinate engagement with traders and industry bodies in relation to enforcement actions and any follow-on compliance activity related to the inspections.

  • Identify learnings from inspection activity and implement continuous process improvement related to processes and procedures.

  • Analyse data from different sources for the purposes of preparing files for compliance monitoring and inspection activity. This may include using data gathered from open source intelligence and running reports from internal databases.

  • Complete assessments regarding potential breaches of consumer law by traders and prepare high quality written reports, including recommendations for actions to manager.

  • Contribute and support the manager in the development and achievement of the strategic goals

    of the organisation generally and divisional objectives in particular.

  • Participate in cross-divisional activities and projects where required, including investigations (for example, participating in searches for evidence of such breaches, and generally performing the duties of an authorised officer).

  • Providing general administrative support to the Unit and broader Division

Technical and Professional Requirements

Essential

  • Relevant degree or equivalent qualification in law, business, economics, regulation or compliance, finance, information systems; or experience working in an organisation that conducts investigations (and/or inspections) into breaches of statutory or regulatory provisions.

  • Demonstrated ability to design processes and identify potential for improvement and efficiency.

  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent administration and organisational skills with the ability to work in a high-volume environment, multi-task, determine prioritise and ensure deadlines are met.

  • High standard in PC skills with particular aptitude in using Microsoft Word and Excel.

Desirable

  • Established knowledge of consumer protection law or a demonstrated interest in this area and/or in collaborative and online consumer markets.

  • Experience conducting internet/desk-based investigations e.g. open source intelligence skills, data mining or interrogation of databases.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing high quality reports.

  • Advanced Excel or equivalent
